I saw a show earlier on PBS about mules. It brought back tons of memories...my (maternal) grandfather working the farm with his two mules. He plowed with those mules; mowed and raked hay...everything. I remember helping him in the field one day - I held the bag while he filled it and I got a chicken feather in my eye (did I mention that he was filling the bag with manure?? lol) He would use the mules to pull the manure spreader over the tobacco field to improve the soil. It must of been in the late spring or early summer because I remember wearing shorts but there was nothing in the field yet - the soil hadn't even been broken and turned after a winter's rest.
I remember those mules were a matched pair, but one was a jack and one a jennet. They were very dark brown - almost black except for the very light tan around their muzzles and eyes. I remember the day that they were taken away too - I was seven. My grandfather had died and the mules were sold. The man who bought them put them in back of his truck and was just about to leave when he asked what their names were...I only knew Jack's name. I remember leaning right into my grandmother's side while those mules were being loaded.
Funny, I hadn't thought of those mules in a long time.
The show was filmed in California and was about the 'Mule Days' they have in...oh, I can't remember the name of that little town in the shadow of the Sierra Nevadas. They evidently have all kinds of classes in the show - although the show jumping took a little getting used to. They can jump as well as any horse, obviously, but I just think that riding mules need western tack. Maybe I'm biased.
I got to thinking while I watched this show - I wonder what it's like to have mules, instead of horses? It seems like a neat idea - I could actually see myself riding some trails on a mule. I can see it now - riding the trails at Cedars of Lebanon or Land Between the Lakes; riding in the 'Mule Days' in Columbia...I think I'm going to at least check into the idea...
I know better than to believe that bullshit about how mean they are and such - they show about as much meanness as they're shown. They're smart that way - and pretty much all the way around. I wonder if Monty Roberts' techniques would work on mules? I don't really see why not - it's all an equine language...
Well...I think I'll end this entry here. I still have to do that homework for the Sexuality and Soul Awareness class (the list of all qualities male and female). My problem is that when I start working on it - I can see most of the qualities as both male and female!
On to the next entry
