December 25, 1998 - Christmas Day

Today turned out to be a pretty good day. We went over to my aunt and uncle's new place for dinner...and I promptly got into trouble with the dog. I made the classic mistake of getting too familiar with him and he let me know that he would not stand for it. In fact, he growled at me and avoided me for quite a while. Consider it the equivilent of going up to a total stranger and just falling all over him while saying, "Hhhiiii......" I can't believe I did that - I know better.

I also saw something today that I have never seen before...pet roosters. These were two little banty roosters that would jump up into your lap and let you pet them - one even fell alseep while it was being petted. It was bizarre.

I have to say that the best part of the visit was down in the basement. It has been converted into an apartment and my uncle has all his photos of the cars that he's restored on the walls. He also has some reproductions of paintings of Marilyn Monroe; Elvis, James Dean and Marlon Brando amongst the photos...I surprised him by knowing who they all were - and by being envious of his having the James Dean stamps that the post office put out a while back. I thought it interesting also that a very cool car that I saw for sale yesterday in Portland turned out to have originally been restored by him - and that the car showed up several times in photos on that wall...synchronicity.

More synchronicity occurred today - my mom gave me some books that detail the weapons, uniforms and whatnot of the civil war. Union and Confederate. Plenty of precise photos and descriptions - this after I have that idea for a story last night. She also gave me Sarah Morgan's diary (sorry, I can't remember what it's actually called right now) which is actual entries written during the war. Now I have a few more things to research for the story, mostly details about everyday life...and how ideas about 'talents' were received during the war and whether or not people with those 'talents' were shunned or not. I also need information about how well people knew the edible foodstuffs that grew wild (coltsfoot; plaintain, lamb's quarters, pokeweed, mushrooms, etc.) and how often they used them. I think I'll research that tomorrow on the Web. Hmmm...perhaps I should send a message to the Maidens - you never know what kind of info you'll get there!

Well - I think I'm going to end this entry and go get warm. Good night Sweetie.
