I had a nose ring once.
Well, okay ~ it was a faux nose ring. I wanted to see what it was like to have a ring without all the pain involved. Of course, everyone I knew hated it which made me wear it all the more (anything that inspired that much ire was definitely worth it!)
I am strange when it comes to pain. I don't have anything pierced because I couldn't stand the thought of someone else punching holes in me or inflicting any kind of pain on me. I'm the same way about shots. Yet, on the occasions when I've had to open up a wound a bit more to get all of a splinter out or the like ~ I can do it, no problem.
A few years ago, I was at this Samhain festival. For supper one night, somebody cooked up a big ol' pot of homemade veggie soup, complete with whole tomatoes and grilled cheese on the side. It the best stuff I have ever tasted ~ especially those tomatoes. The problem was, whenever someone would try to ladle out a bowl of the soup, more often than not a tomato would plop right down into the soup and splash whoever was nearby. Well, I couldn't stand it and have to have another bowl of that soup. As I was standing there, doing a real brilliant thing and holding the bowl as someone else ladled the soup into it, it happened. A tomato about half the size of the bowl plopped right down and sent scaldingly hot soup over my hands.
What did I do? Ignored my first impulse to drop the bowl and carefully set it down on the counter next to me. The only thing I could think was to do that rather than have the soup do the same thing to the other people standing around that it had done to me. Still, even I think it's a strange reaction to have!
Even with that said, I don't think I'll be doing any self piercing anytime soon.
