I look out over the border into this landscape of my ancestors - hills jutting sharply into the sky like pyramids waiting to be discovered and the Cumberland river snaking sensuously around them like a forbidden lover. The moon rises over it all as if in awe of this land's tenacity to rivel Her. Legends say that this was the land of the blond haired, blue eyed Azgen. I feel them here - my ancestors, so close - I know they never left. The stories also say that this place came to be called Defeated Creek because of the defeat of the Indians here by the whites. But I have to ask...who were really the defeated ones here?

I think I'll take a day to spend at Defeated, just writing and sketching. When I was there a week or so ago, it really spoke to me (if the paragraph above is any indication). lol. There is a bench that sits just a foot or two from the water and a small downed cedar half submerged a few feet away - I'll work from there. Water has always been my favorite element. I think perhaps I'll see about going to Land Between the Lakes sometime also - that's where I found an eagle claw on the shore of Kentucky Lake while I was hiking near the northern boundary...I wonder if anyone else ever found it?

The news last night reported that the covered bridge at Port Royal may be in danger of falling in and being washed downstream because of all this rain we've had lately. It would be a shame if it did - it's a beautiful bridge and only one of 8 left in the state. I have good memories of standing on that bridge, watching a huge skink scurry up and down on the supports...Port Royal is a state historical area - it was the last 'comfortable' stop on the Trail of Tears for the Cherokee. They rested here overnight and the townspeople came out and made sure that they had plenty of food and conversation.

I spent a while outside earlier - I just laid down in the grass, intending to cloud gaze but all the clouds disappeared! It was neat anyway. One cloud I did manage to see reminded me of some fantasical bird, or perhaps a carnival mask. The cats came over and assumed that I was a pillow for them to lie on, especially the kittens. I ended up dozing for about an hour and a half as Kitt purred in my ear. I also noted two flight corridors that I hadn't noticed before, that brings the totals up to five - four commercial and one military. I suppose this information will come in handy sometime...maybe.

Flora note: the catnip has sprouted in its pot and in a few weeks, it'll be ready to put out. I don't know if it's true what they say about catnip, 'Grow it, the cats ignore it; Transplant it, cats devour it.' (or somesuch) Last time I grew it right in the ground, the kittens loved it to death before it was 2 inches tall. I don't think I'll take any chances with this batch...lol.
