Website of the day:  Auntie's Beads. Hello. My name is Dawn and I'm a bead-aholic. I couldn't help myself, y'know, when I saw that amber beads were 17 cents apiece. We're talkin' real amber here...and the peridot. Don't get me started on the peridot...

My Mom and the Little Old Lady

Well. My mom is getting very good at dropping things on me lately ~ and all the cool stuff seems to happen to her as well. She told me last Sunday that she and Bobbie had gone to an estate auction the day before and she even managed to walk away with some of the dishes for dirt cheap. She waited until today to tell me the rest.

My mom wanted to know more about the lady who had owned the estate, so she asked around a bit. Evidently, the lady was 85 years old when she died four years ago and her family had been squabbling ever since ~ it even got to the point where if there was something that a family member wanted, they had to bid on it like everyone else (sounds like a loving bunch, huh?)

Anyway, my mom and Bobbie stayed awhile and left for lunch. When they came back, my mom ended up having to make a trip back to the truck to get her number or else she wouldn't be able to bid on anything. Now, the auction was set up in such a way that you could either go on one side of the house and it was a straight shot to the parking or you could go along the other side, where it was a bit longer trek but you could see some of the furniture and accessories that hadn't been auctioned off yet. Well, she turns the corner and there is this little old lady (She was every bit of 85) sitting in a straight back chair, looking at an equally ancient quilt. Here's what happened next:

My mom: "Oh! Did you buy the quilt?"
Lady: "No, my father did." (to which my mom said she thought to herself, "Well how old is he?" but was too confused to follow up on what the lady had said.)
My mom: "Did you know the lady that lived here?"
Lady: "Why yes I did. It was me!"

At this point, my mom said, she was utterly confused, especially since everyone had said that the owner of the estate had died 4 years ago. Granted, the lady could have been 1.) confused herself, or 2.) had lived in the house in the interim while the family fought over what to do with the estate and just didn't mention that part.

Then there's the other explanation. Could it have been the owner of the estate, herself? Who's to say? My mom did say that when she got back to the auction, she asked Bobbie if he saw the 'little woman in the blue dress', sitting in a straight backed chair ~ and he did. Before she could ask any of the family members who the woman was, she disappeared. My mom didn't see her leave or anything ~ she was just gone. Yeah ~ the lady could have just left with a family member or even simply walked to a spot that couldn't be seen from the auction site (maybe ~ I need to ask about that.) but still, the whole situation just sounds odd.

Damn it ~ all the cool stuff is happening to everyone else lately! Since I am fully aware of the value of 'Beware of what you wish for', here is my wish: I WANT TO EXPERIENCE SOME OF THIS STUFF TOO!!!!!
